Community:

As General Recycling continues to work for a cleaner future, we believe in also supporting our community where help is needed. Over the years General has been active with many charitable causes in and around our area, and we are proud to extend our efforts to one of the worthiest causes yet. We encourage all of our clients, whether they utilize our bin service or visit us at our yard, to donate what they can and take part in fighting the effects of childhood cancer.

Kids with Cancer Society

Each year, approximately 75 children in Northern Alberta will be diagnosed with childhood cancer. Affected families describe the services of the Kids with Cancer Society (KwCS) as a lifeline during their time of need. Founded in 1979, this non-profit organization funds more than 30 programs addressing the emotional, clinical, and research needs of children with cancer and their families.

Support Programs:

  • Social Worker
  • Monthly support meetings
  • Newly diagnosed visitation program
  • Camp Beat It
  • Sibling support groups
  • Beaded Journey

Clinical Support:

  • Brainworks program – supporting children who experience learning difficulties associated with treatment
  • Educational materials
  • Resource manuals
  • Rural distance learning programs

Research Programs & Professional Development:

  • Childhood Cancer Survivors program – helping to ensure that children do not face life threatening or life altering effects of treatment
  • Support of clinical trials
  • Providing paediatric oncology staff with the opportunity to grow in their profession and keep abreast of cutting-edge advances

In order to support children and their families during their greatest time of need, the KwCS raises in excess of 1.5 million dollars a year. This is the key to ensuring that funding is allocated for services that are not funded through other sources. The KWCS works closely with the paediatric oncology medical team in Edmonton to ensure that it only funds programs identified as a priority by those dealing first hand with children with cancer and their families. For a complete listing of the programs and services that the KwCS provides, visit www.kidswithcancer.ca.

General Makes A Difference:

General Recycling is proud to have recently reached a milestone with a total figure of $250,000 raised for the Kids With Cancer Society. It is with the affected children and their families in mind that we strive to expand this worthiest of causes and help bring more smiles to faces such as 4 year- old Kaydence Taillion. Together with the tireless efforts of Executive Director Val Figliuzzi, her staff and board of directors, as well as Dr. Paul Grundy and his team at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, we will continue to raise new levels of awareness and success in the battle against childhood cancer.

A special thanks to all of our valued supporters.

General Leads The Pack

Le Tour Of Hope, June 20-28, 2009

We are pleased to present the upcoming Le Tour of Hope in support of the Kids With Cancer Society. Ride marshal, organizer, and columnist for The Edmonton Journal, Nick Lees will lead a team of devoted volunteers on a cycle tour spanning almost 1000 km from Montana back to Edmonton. The ride will take place June 20 – 28. Everyone is invited to show their support and participate by means of registration, rider pledge, or general donation.

General Recycling Industries is proud to sponsor the event with a contribution of $20,000. We hope that this will be the first of many successful tours in support of the Kids With Cancer Society, but it is your loyal support that has helped GRI take it this far. Remember, every bit counts! So get into gear and join us at Hawrelak Park on June 28 to welcome our riders home.

For more details please contact Val Figliuzzi at the Kids With Cancer Society or visit Le Tour Of Hope.

We hope to see you there!

Riders Unite

The finish line was crossed and the success of this year’s Le Tour of Hope marks the first of many more to come. Riders braved the elements and pedaled their hearts out, but it was worth every inch. A grand total of $190,000 was raised for the Kids with Cancer Society including pledges and donations from contributors like you.

We are proud to have been a part of this great event and are already recruiting participants for next year’s tour! So if you’d like to get more involved and could use some exercise while having a blast out on the open road, find out more about joining next year’s event.

A warm thanks to Val Figliuzzi, Nick Lees and Matt Decore for their strength and leadership during this extraordinary event.
