4 things to do before you scrap your car

Do you have an old, rundown car? If so, it might be time to consider scrapping it.

Indeed, recycling your old vehicle is a great way to make a little extra cash. However, here are a few things you should do before scrapping your car.

1. Shop around

Start by doing some research. Try to learn more about your car and find out what it’s worth. Do you have conventional steel wheels or modern alloy wheels? This can affect your car’s value. Reach out to a few different dealerships and car recycling facilities to see what they’re willing to pay for your vehicle. This way you can compare offers and get the best possible price.

2. Collect your belongings

If you’re like most people, chances are you’ve stored some of your belongings in your car. Some examples of items that are frequently left behind include spare change, water bottles, sunglasses, clothes, watches and CDs. Do a thorough sweep of your vehicle. Make sure to inspect the trunk, glove compartment and areas under and behind the seats.

3. Remove your licence plates

Remember to remove your licence plates before you sell or scrap your car. All registered vehicles are associated with a vehicle permit and licence plate. While the vehicle permit can be handed over to another person, as is the case when you sell your car to someone else, a licence plate can’t be transferred. Your license plate needs to remain with you.

So, what should you do with your plate once you’ve removed it? You can either transfer it to a new car that’s registered in your name or return it to a Ministry of Transportation office.

4. Transfer the ownership

If you sell your car, you’ll need to transfer the ownership or vehicle permit to the person that’s buying it. If you’re trading it into a dealership, they’ll often take care of all the necessary paperwork. For a car that your scrapping, you’ll need to provide a copy of the ownership to the scrapyard to prove that you own it and that it’s not stolen.
